Miyoshi Mt. Takatani Sea of Clouds Observation Deck daylight view

Mt. Takatani Observation Deck

The town of Miyoshi sits in a basin surrounded by mountains where three rivers converge. Thanks to this location, a natural phenomenon called the sea of fog occurs from autumn to early spring. The best place to appreciate this spectacular sight the lookout on Mt. Takatani, 15 minutes by car from central Miyoshi.

The formation of the fog is the result of basic atmospheric conditions. Each evening, warm air from the river meets colder air descending from the mountains. As the river water evaporates, moisture condenses into fine droplets that hang above the basin. This creates a broad layer of mist between the river surface and low-lying clouds, illuminated by the rising sun.

The observation deck on Mt. Takatani sits at an elevation of nearly 500 m. Many visitors arrive before dawn to observe the sunrise and secure a parking space. The fog is most impressive in autumn, when higher humidity increases its density.

The viewing deck is also worth visiting throughout the day. In clear weather, it offers a wide view of Miyoshi, and a metal sign provides a guide to the landscape below. At night, the city is visible with landmarks such as the red Tomoe Bridge and networks of illuminated streets. Under suitable conditions, a nighttime sea of fog forms and is lit from below, appearing as a soft glow above the city.

The observation deck is a very short walk up from the parking area.
