Azuchi Castle Museum
Azuchi Castle Museum is an eye-catching castle-like building next to the plaza of JR Azuchi Station. It’s a few kilometres from the original castle ruins. The museum provides a clear and engaging introduction to both the fortress and the era of Oda Nobunaga’s rule in the Ōmi region and beyond.
At the heart of the exhibition is a detailed 1:20 scale reconstruction of Azuchi Castle as historians believe it once appeared. The craftsmanship of this model alone is worth the visit. With the press of a button, the model separates into two sections, allowing you to walk between them and look closely at the elaborate internal layout. A vast central hall once rose through four levels, with a two-storey Buddhist stupa at its centre and galleries overlooking it from above. The richly decorated upper floors towered over this core space. In the miniature scene, a small figure of Nobunaga himself looks out across the surrounding lands.
The museum is arranged over two storeys, and from the upper level you can view the castle model from above as well. Displays also explore Nobunaga’s outward-looking interests, which set him apart from later periods when Japan was largely closed to foreign contact. One section focuses on a famous mission of four young envoys sent to Europe, shown carrying a folding screen illustrating Azuchi Castle. Ceramic panels by a modern artist trace both the castle town and the long journey via Kyōto and Nagasaki, across the seas through Macau, and onward to Lisbon and Rome for an audience with the pope.
Elsewhere in the museum are reproductions of samurai armour, a scale diorama of the Kannonji and Azuchi castle sites, and expressive washi-paper dolls portraying scenes from medieval daily life. There are also small models depicting other versions of how Azuchi castle may have looked. A kiosk sells tasteful souvenirs such as postcards and figurines, and for the hungry, there’s a modest cafeteria serving light meals.
Combining a visit here with the castle ruins themselves, the nearby Azuchi Castle Archaeological Museum, and Nobunaga’s Castle Museum makes for a well-rounded and informative day trip.
