Shōdoshima Island

Shōdo Island is the second largest island in the Seto Inland Sea, an hour by ferry from Takamatsu. The island is known for its olives, wild monkeys, the spectacular Kanka Gorge. It was the location of the anti-war novel and film Twenty-Four Eyes, and there film set is preserved as an outdoor museum. It’s also known for its soy sauce production and its own circular pilgrimage of 88 Buddhist temples. Unlike the Shikoku Pilgrimage, many of the temples of the Shōdoshima Pilgrimage are located in caves or built into cliffs.

Shō​​​​​​​doshima is one of the venues for the Setouchi Triennale art festival, and there are some permanent art installations from past festivals dotted around the island.
