Mt. Godai
Mt. Godai is a small mountain within Kōchi City. It’s the site of Chikurin-ji, temple No. 41 on the Shikoku pilgrimage. Chikurin-ji means ‘bamboo forest temple’, although today, Mt. Godai is more broad-leaf and pine forest than bamboo.
Mt. Godai takes its name from a much larger mountain with five peaks in China which it resembles slightly. It’s thought to have originally been a lookout post guarding the bay, and excavations found piles of seashells left there by the watchers. Today, a lookout point offers a dramatic view of the complex geography of Kōchi Bay.
Mt. Godai is also home to the Makino Botanical Gardens, which commemorates Dr. Makino Tomitarō, a celebrated botanist from Kōchi. This attractive park has gardens, greenhouses and an interesting museum.
