Nishiyama Kōryū-ji Temple

Nishiyama Kōryū-ji is a temple located on a forested hillside in the western part of Saijō in Ehime. The main hall was built in 1375. It’s designated as an Important National Cultural Property. Nishiyama Kōryū-ji belongs to the Daigō School of the Shingon Buddhist sect. The temple is No.10 of the bangai unofficial temples of the 88-temple Shikoku Pilgrimage.

Three hundred Japanese maples or momiji are planted in the grounds of Nishiyama Kōryū-ji, which explains the popular name for Kōryū-ji, “Maple Temple” — Momijidera.

The three-storey pagoda, Niō Gate and Chōkushi Gate are particularly beautiful.
