Innoshima Suigun Castle

The Murakami Suigun was one of the maritime clans active in the Inland Sea in the Warring States period. These clans were reviled as pirates by land-based clans. One branch of the Murakami was based on Innoshima, where they had a rudimentary wooden fortress. Today’s concrete confection was built in 1983 as a museum to house historic artefacts and isn’t an authentic recreation.

You can enter one of the watchtowers free of charge. The main building has an interesting collection of arms and armour.

At the foot of the hill is Konren-ji Temple, the temple of the Murakami clan, where the graves of the clan members can still be seen.
