Okuda Gensō & Sayume Art Museum
The Okuda Gensō & Sayume Art Museum features the works of Okuda Gensō, a master of Nihonga Japanese-style painting, and large dolls made by his wife Sayume, both of whom were born in Miyoshi. It’s the only art museum in Japan to be named after a married couple.
Okuda Gensō painted massive canvases with fantastical landscapes reminiscent of Chinese ink paintings, although often using vivid colours, particularly red. Despite the size of the works, each tree and rock is painted in detail.
The dolls of Okuda Sayume are similarly large and detailed. The highly colourful figures reflect an idealised beauty.
The gallery itself a work of considerable architectural beauty, especially the reflecting pool in the centre of the structure.
Special exhibitions of the works of other artists are also shown. Unfortunately, photography is strictly prohibited in the galleries of the Okuda’s works.
