Konpira Grand Theatre

The Konpira Grand Theatre, also known as the Kanamaruza, is a Kabuki theatre. Originally constructed in 1835, it’s the oldest kabuki theatre in Japan. Kabuki plays are performed for one month each year, usually in April. The theatre is open to visitors, and you can explore the audience hall, stage, dressing rooms, and the basement where you can see the human-powered rotating stage and trapdoors used by actors for dramatic entrances and exits.

The current theatre replaced various temporary structures built on the site, and it was built with money raised by the local geisha. It fell into disuse for many years, and after being used as a cinema, it was restored in 1976 to its Edo-period appearance.
