Konpira Shoin

The Shoin, also known as the Treasure House, comprises two buildings in the mountainside precincts of Konpira Shrine, the Omoteshoin and Okushoin, both of which have sliding doors painted by famous artists. Only the Omoteshoin is open to the public. The building itself with its small garden is a designated National Treasure that dates from 1659. It houses an extraordinary collection of painted screens by Edo period artist Maruyama Ōkyo (1733-1795). The paintings depict people, landscapes, and domestic and foreign wildlife in several styles.
