Heike Residence outside

Heike Residence

This museum is in an Edo-period home associated with the Taira Clan, also known as the Heike, who were defeated by the Minamoto Clan in the Heian period. It belonged to a descendant of Horikawa Naiki, who was private doctor to the infant Emperor Antoku whose placement on the throne led to the conflict with the Minamoto. After their defeat, the Taira fled to Iya, where Horikawa served as a doctor and oracle.

The beautiful thatched wooden building remains as it was in the Edo period. The dusty, unloved, and eclectic exhibits include armour, flags, and ancient documents. An 800-year old tree stands in the garden.
