Kamiyama

Kamiyama (God Mountain) is a region located in the middle of Tokushima Prefecture. The area has been settled since ancient times and is mentioned in the Nihon Shoki, one of Japan’s earliest written records. Kamiyama is surrounded by mountains and follows the Akui River flowing through the centre of town. Farms and residential areas are dotted along the river. Most of the town’s area is mountainous with an altitude ranging from 300 to 1,500 m above sea level.

Amagoi no Taki Waterfalls

This is a series of waterfalls, with Amagoi no Taki being the largest. Two streams, a ‘male’ and a ‘female’ stream, cascade down over 45 m uniting in a single stream below. A steep, 800 m hike up trails and steps brings you to the main falls, and there’s beautiful scenery to enjoy on the way up.

Agawa Village

Agawa Village is planted with large orchards of Japanese plum blossom which blossom in early spring, filling the air with their scent. The plums are used for making wine and for salting. An Ume Festival is held from the end of February to the end of March, with hiking and other events.

Ōkubo Chichi-Icho Gingko Tree

This large 500-year old gingko tree overlooking the terraced rice paddies in Ōkubo village is said to enrich the breast milk of mothers who pray there. The foliage changes colour dramatically with the seasons, and the yellow leaves of autumn are particularly striking.

Temple No. 12 Shōsan-ji

Shōsan-ji, the second highest temple of the Shikoku pilgrimage is located in Kamiyama.
