Komatsushima
Komatsushima is a small town to the south of Tokushima city. It serves as a port for visits by international cruise ships.
Komatsushima was part of ancient Awa Province. In the Genpei War, Minamoto no Yoshiatsu landed here during his campaign against the Heike clan before the Battle of Yashima. During the Edo period, Komatsushima was part of the Tokushima Domain ruled by the Hachisuka clan from their seat at Tokushima Castle. At that time, it was one of the main ports of Shikoku, especially for the export of indigo, which was a major local product. From the Meiji period, textiles, food processing and paper industries developed. Fishing is still a major industry.
Tatsue-ji, temple 19 on the Shikoku Pilgrimage, is located in Komatsushima.
