Uradome Coast
The Uradome Coast stretches along the Sea of Japan in eastern Tottori Prefecture and is one of the most scenic shorelines in the San’in region. Unlike the long sandy beaches found elsewhere on the prefecture’s coast, Uradome is defined by rugged volcanic rock formations shaped by wind and waves over thousands of years, producing a striking landscape of sea cliffs, arches, caves and jagged reefs set against remarkably clear water. The rocky coast consists of 30-million-year-old granite formed when the Japanese archipelago was part of the continent and the Sea of Japan didn’t exist. The area forms part of the San’in Kaigan National Park and is protected for both its geological and ecological value.
One of the most popular ways to experience the coast is by sightseeing boat, which departs from Uradome Port and cruises slowly along the most dramatic sections of shoreline. From the water, the scale and complexity of the rock formations become much easier to appreciate than from land, with boats threading between narrow channels and approaching caves that are inaccessible on foot. The cliffs rise steeply from the sea in places, while elsewhere they give way to small inlets and hidden beaches, some of which are only visible from offshore. On calm days, the clarity of the water allows passengers to see down to the seabed, adding another dimension to the experience.
The boat tours are operated in small to medium-sized vessels designed for coastal navigation, which gives the ride an intimate feel and allows access to tighter spaces along the rocks. Commentary is provided in Japanese. Even without understanding the narration, the visual appeal is self-explanatory.
Beyond the boat rides, the calm, transparent water of the Uradome Coast is perfect for swimming and snorkelling in summer. Several beaches in the area are designated for safe swimming. In cooler months, the coast is quieter but often more dramatic, with strong winter seas crashing against the cliffs and seabirds riding the winds along the headlands.
Uradome is just a short distance along the San’in coast from the Tottori Sand Dunes, which are just visible from the tour boat. Combined with its distinctive geology, clear water and well-run sightseeing boats, Uradome offers a different and more rugged coastal experience from the sandy beaches for which Tottori is better known, and is one of the prefecture’s most rewarding natural attractions.
