Overview
On this tour, you climb Mt. Higuma, a mountain overlooking the old town of Miyoshi. Your guide is the young Shintō priest of Taisai Shrine. Mt. Higuma was the site of a medieval castle, and near its summit, you discover a sacred rock where local people have worshipped for centuries. In the evening after the trekking, you check in at Kokū, a beautifully renovated traditional building that was once part of a sake brewery. For dinner, you prepare dinner with the proprietress of Mansabō, an interior designer and highly accomplished chef. Using local seasonal ingredients, you prepare a delicious feast together, learning about the unique food culture of this inland region far from the sea. You can enjoy a selection of locally produced sake, wine, and beer with your dinner.
The next day includes a visit to the Mononoke Museum, devoted to the monsters and goblins that emerge from the thick mists that form in the Miyoshi river basin. This is a unique and highly entertaining museum that documents the Japanese fear and longing for the supernatural, through every available artistic medium.
In Miyoshi, you spend time with friendly, expert local guides who live in the town. The special charm of this mountainous region of northern Hiroshima’s lies in experiencing mountain worship, rural cuisine, and folk culture as a cohesive journey.
