JMSDF Kure Museum, Akishio submarine, captain's cabin

JMSDF Kure Museum

The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Kure Museum, commonly known as the “Iron Whale Museum”, is one of Kure’s most distinctive attractions and one of the few museums in the world where you can enter a real decommissioned submarine. Located directly beside the Yamato Museum on Kure’s waterfront, the museum focuses on the history, technology, and modern operations of Japan’s submarine fleet and maritime defence forces.

Its centrepiece is the retired submarine Akishio, a 76-metre-long Yūshio-class submarine that served with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force from 1986 until 2004. The vessel sits dramatically outside the museum building and you can board the submarine itself, moving through the control room, crew quarters, and operational spaces while gaining insight into the confined conditions of submarine life. Displays inside explain navigation systems, sonar, periscope operation, and daily routines aboard modern submarines.

The museum also contains exhibitions on mine warfare, maritime security, and the postwar development of Japan’s naval self-defence capabilities. Interactive displays, equipment demonstrations, and technical exhibits make it more modern and hands-on than many traditional military museums. Rather than focusing heavily on wartime history, the museum primarily examines Japan’s contemporary maritime defence role and the evolution of submarine technology after 1945. Together with the nearby Yamato Museum and the historic naval landscape of Kure harbour, the museum forms part of one of Japan’s most important destinations for naval and military history tourism. The contrast between the wartime focus of the Yamato Museum and the modern operational focus of the Iron Whale Museum give you a broader understanding of Japan’s maritime history from the Imperial Navy through to the present day.
