This tour visits the major sights of Nagasaki Prefecture, focusing on the historic towns and cities of each region, and the natural wonders found in the countryside between them. You travel in a private vehicle with your own driver and guide, staying in some of the most characterful accommodation in the region. Nagasaki is a volcanically active area and the scale of the landscape is dramatically big, with a great smoking volcano in the south. This volcanic activity also produces many hot springs, which you can enjoy at each stay.

Itinerary

  • You fly to Nagasaki Airport where you meet your driver and guide. Then you drive to Hirado where you visit the castle and stroll around the town before checking into your hotel. Your accommodation is a luxury boutique hotel on a rise overlooking the scenic Hirado Strait, where dinner (included) is served.

  • After breakfast (included), you drive to the Matsuura Historical Museum in Hirado. Hirado is a compact town, and you can easily walk to the other main sights such as the Dutch Trading Post and St. Francis Xavier Memorial Church. You stay another night in Hirado.

  • After breakfast (included), you check out and drive to Mukyūdō, a cave excavated by schoolchildren in WWII, then to Hario Transmission Station from where the signal to begin the Pearl Harbor attack was sent. After lunch, you drive to picturesque Shitsu Church Shitsu Church and visit the Shitsu Aid Centre where a French priest administered Christian charity. At the San Jiwan Karematsu Shrine, you learn how the Hidden Christians disguised their worship under the guise of native religion. Then you drive into Nagasaki City to stay at a boutique hotel where dinner (included) is served.

  • After breakfast (included), you visit a selection of Nagasaki’s fascinating heritage sites including Ōura Church and seminary, Twenty-Six Martyrs Museum and Monument, and the Nagasaki Museum of History & Culture. Other options are the Mt. Inasa Overlook with its view over Nagasaki, Suwa Shrine, and Glover Garden. You stay in Nagasaki. For dinner, you have the option of enjoying a Nagasaki-style banquet with geisha.

  • After breakfast (included) you drive to Ogawa Kite Shop and learn about the Indonesian fighting kites flown by the foreign merchants of Nagasaki. Here too are sites associated with samurai hero Sakamoto Ryōma and doctor Philipp Franz von Siebold. After lunch, you explore the Chinese heritage of Nagasaki including Chinatown, the Nakashima River bridges, Fukusai-ji Temple, and the Confucius Shrine. You stay in Nagasaki.

  • After breakfast (included), you check out and drive to Chijiwa where you’re treated to a magnificent view of Mt. Unzen. Then you drive up the shoulder of the volcano and take a cable car up to the smoking lava dome, and visit the “hells” where steam bubbles out of the ground. Then you drive down to the opposite coast to stay at an onsen hotel beside the Ariake Sea, where dinner (included) is served at the accommodation.

  • After breakfast (included), you drive to the site of Hara Castle where Christian samurai and peasants staged an ill-fated insurrection. You also visit Hinoe Castle, a very different site. The nearby Arima Christian Heritage Museum puts this local history into perspective. Then you visit the pretty port town of Kuchinotsu, an early base for Jesuit missionaries. You stay another night at the onsen hotel. Dinner (included) is served at the accommodation.

  • After breakfast (included), you check out from the hotel and drive to Shimabara Castle with its impressive stone walls and reconstructed watchtowers and keep. You also visit a street of authentically preserved samurai residences in the castle town. After lunch, you drive to Nagasaki Airport where the tour ends.
